Gaya Teacher Training Institute reduces energy usage by 40pc
Kota Kinabalu: The Gaya Teacher Training Institute (IPG) here received a five-star recognition for having
successfully reduced its energy usage by over 40 per cent. IPG managed to reduce its power usage within
six months after the Energy Efficiency Programme (EEP) was launched in April 2010.
Within six months of implementation, the institute was able to reduce its energy usage by 40.35 per cent,
which exceeded the 35 per cent of reduction target. The EEP, better known as Proketen, is a collaboration
programme between IGP and the Education, Training and Research Centre of Renewable Energy and
Energy Efficient (Cetree), University of Science Malaysia in Penang.
The programme is aimed at raising awareness and promoting energy efficiency with energy sustainability to
establish IPG Gaya Campus as a showcase centre for energy saving. Head of Programme Secretariat Carole
Anne Justin attributed the success to her team of hard working volunteers whom she recruited among the
trainee teachers and staff.
"These dedicated team of 150 volunteers organised and carried out Proketen Hour on Saturday and
Sundays in their hostels. In these efforts, all hostelites practised zero usage of energy for one hour every
weekend. They also continuously updated information on notice boards on campus."
A Malay language option trainee teacher, Dg Mar Ezzah shared that the colour tagging on switches was
an effective reminder to save energy by only turning on the necessary electrical appliances that she needed to use for
the purpose of power saving.
Meanwhile, Cetree Director Professor Dr Haslan Abu Hassan was extremely impressed with the success shown by IPG
Gaya Campus.
"It is near impossible to reduce energy by almost half within six months but Gaya has proven it with their sheer effort and
commitment.
"IPG Gaya is the showcase of success story of Cetree. We are very proud of them. Cetree is going to engage their
assistance
to disseminate similar effort in other parts of the country," he said.
IPG Gaya director Salmah Abdullah on the other hand planned to extend Proketen to other teacher education
institutes throughout the country with the consent by the rector of IPG Malaysia. She added that she strongly
believed that making Gaya the centre of Proketen is the right way forward.
"The trainee teacher volunteers who are posted to schools are now the catalysts to spread the knowledge and
continue the effort of energy saving in schools by educating our young generations.
"This is also our community service. This is how we give back to our society in a small way to contribute towards
energy saving in the world."
Since the launching of Proketen, both IPG Gaya and Cetree have worked closely to organise and carry out
awareness campaigns, energy audits, exhibitions, competitions, pamphlet distributions and EE training modules.
Further efforts were also extended to work hand in hand with the Environmental Action Committee (EAC) during
the Sabah State level World Environmental Week Celebration.
